Akismet, Anti Spam Warrior

Akismet, Anti Spam Warrior

Got a blog and sick of comment spam?

You need Akismet, my favourite anti-spam warrior that automatically shoves comment spam into a junk box.

Look at the stats, over 23 billion spam comments stopped, more than 35 million in the last 24 hours.

Every WordPress blog I build includes Akismet. You can see from the screenshot why I do.

WordPress, More Than 30M Downloads

If you’re thinking about a CMS for your website, you’d be hard-pressed to ignore WordPress, the world’s favourite blogging platform which is, of course, much more than a pure blogging platform.

Back in November, following head-to-head voting against Joomla and Drupal, WordPress won the 2010 Open Source CMS Hall of Fame award.

To give you a taste of just how many people know how great WordPress is, take a look at at the WordPress download counter. I just did and took the screengrab below.

It’s easy for me to say choose WordPress because I know how great it is – but here’s more proof of how great it is.

30 million people cannot all be wrong.

WordPress Theme Styles With CSS

WordPress has many themes to choose from and many of them have customizable backgrounds, menus, content layouts, and headers you can change to suit your own preferences.

But you can also take your site’s customization a step further and completely personalize any theme’s stylesheet by changing fonts, colors, borders, backgrounds, and even the layout of the site using the Custom CSS upgrade, a paid upgrade that costs $14.97 per blog, per year.

Many WordPress fans have made a beautiful home for their content using one of the basic WordPress themes as a base and customizing the site with the Custom CSS upgrade.

Here are some examples:

Deluxe Mastering – Outstanding Service

“We searched for a while to find a website designer and after several false starts we came across Chris. Right from the start we were impressed with Chris’ approach and he took time to understand our needs. Nothing was too hard for him and he was always at the ready to answer our questions… even after business hours. You’d be amazed how many so called professional operations couldn’t even return repeated phone calls and emails… His level of service is outstanding as is his attention to detail. I have no hesitation in recommending Chris for any website design requirements you may have…”

Deluxe Mastering – Web Design & Development

Ever wondered who was working behind-the-scenes with Jimmy Barnes, 1200 Techniques, Eskimo Joe or Guy Sebastien? The answer is Jack-The-Bear, (aka Tony Mantz) and founder of Deluxe Mastering, Australia’s hottest mastering facility for CD, Vinyl & Releasing audio tracks online. With a state of the art studio and Australia’s most formidable team of mastering engineers, its no surprise that top musicians and bands pick Jack-The-Bear and his facilities first.

The challenge set for me was to improve Jack-The-Bear’s Deluxe Mastering web presence. He wanted a better looking site with improved search engine ranking and functionality, the sort of site that befits someone of Jack-The-Bear’s status in his industry. Here is what I did:

  • Conducted a review on the existing site, there was plenty of scope for improvement.
  • Checked out his competitors and created a design that clearly set him apart.
  • Created a blog area so Jack-The-Bear and his team could post articles and visitors could comment.
  • Incorporated an online enquiry form to make it easy for Jack-The-Bear to contact customers.

The new website was built using WordPress so it was super-easy for them to manage the site themselves.
